Looking over the solution stats for the problems it seems clear that the difficulty has been ramped up significantly for the last 150 or so problems. Perhaps more interest in the site would result if it were forked into those problems that can be solved without the specialized knowledge of math esoterica that the more recent entries require and those meant for the relatively few gurus who can deal with anything offered. Just a thought...

Project Euler publishes problems with a wide range of difficulty.
If you look at the problems published since september 2010 (that is the problems with an ID from 300 onwards) you get the following number of solvers:

The varying degree of difficulty is clearly visible from the wide range in the number of solvers for problems that are published roughly at the same time.

As Hans explained with some revealing and helpful data, the problems currently cycle through easy, medium, hard, medium, and so on. However, with the arrival of HTML5 (most current browsers already supporting it) and a desperate need for me to address the poor accessibility the site currently provides, one of my projects this year is to re-write the engine for the website. This presents an excellent opportunity to review and possibly restructure the interface - the whole team have ideas which we will be discussing. So in the meantime be selective with the problems and I hope you continue to find something at the right level and which you achieve that wonderful sense of satisfaction from solving.
