The board colour scheme / "style" should be a configurable personal profile property.
The natural place for it would be in User Control Panel > Board preferences > Edit display options.

I preferred the old scheme, too.

I've set it so you can switch between the two (or more if I add them). The only problem is that I have done some crafty mods to reduce spamming and this means that if an update comes out (and they do, often!) I have to modify all the files associated with each theme.
