Hello, I am a 50-year-old university professor. I created a Project Euler account in 2019 to accompany my son in learning mathematics and computer science. I had solved almost every problem on Project Euler up until mid-2023, by which time my son had graduated from high school and developed other interests.

Recently, my next son started 10th grade, and I returned to review the problems I had solved on Project Euler in order to continue teaching him. In my spare time, I also work on new problems.

However, when I recently logged into my account, I saw the message: “This account has been permanently unlisted.” To be honest, being listed or not is not very important to me (I already have quite a few awards), but I was rather disheartened to be singled out in such a way. I believe it would have been more appropriate to receive a verification request or something similar instead.

I am not an administrator. But I can guess why you are permanently unlisted. You say you had "solved" almost every problem and I see you are a 925+ member. Why can't you get "High five" award? (Solve the five most recent problems) Of course, You also cannot get "Ten Out Of Ten" and "State Of The Art" award.

In my opinion, it is very suspicious for a 925+ member without a "High five" award.

By the way, your alias "Son of the God" is really annoying.

• "Son of the God" reflects our religious belief. The fact that you found it annoying only shows your lack of tolerance for differing beliefs. I hope you will become more understanding as you grow older.

• The "award" I mentioned above was not referring to things like "High Five," "Ten Out Of Ten," or "State Of The Art" — but to actual awards in the field of mathematics. However, your comment made me double-check, and I did notice that I had received the "Chart Topper" award.

• Racing to solve a PE problem early brings me no particular joy, especially since new problems often appear in the middle of the night or at inconvenient hours when I’m not available. Typically, I only spend around 30 minutes a week on the remaining unsolved PE problems — it's not my top priority, and I have little motivation to chase "awards."

My only suggestion is that there are more courteous ways to engage with community members rather than resorting to what feels like toxic judgment.

I'm a 78 year old Admin. Project Euler has quite a few retired members,
So 50 year feels for me not very old, on the contrary.


In Christianity the son of God is Jesus Christ. For Christians calling oneself Son of the God is a sincere profanity.
People got killed for less.

What makes you think echip is a youth that still has to grow up?

Perhaps you don't know but Project Euler uses a rotating publication scheme. It rotates 3 hours a time.

How things feel is a personal thing, no objective measure.

I've known about Project Euler since 2005, probably through Paul's Online Math Notes, and I'm aware that many older members participate. I mentioned the age of 50 while telling my story; it was not meant as an excuse or an attempt to mislead. I also had no intention of blaspheming against Catholics (otherwise, I would have chosen the alias "SonOfGod").

Regarding echip, I don't know their age, but I hope he/she becomes more tolerant. How can one live comfortably while being bothered by an alias!?

I am also aware that Project Euler's problems are published at different times, perhaps to be fair to members in different locations, but the truth is I have never set an alarm to solve the latest PE problem, and I don't really care about racing for the top rankings.

Finally, I think these discussions are rather meaningless and have strayed far from my original suggestion. I just wanted to express that I am solving PE problems quietly, not wanting to compete for the top or any awards. Being unlisted was a small surprise to me, and it made me feel uncomfortable, that's all. I will continue to solve PE problems as I usually do and hope not to receive any more surprises.

For your information: Catholics aren't the only Christians, there are many flavours of Christianity. As there are many flavours of Islam. Perhaps for every belief there are many flavours.
(That makes me doubtful of the use of religious utterings on international fora)

I intended not to continue this discussion thread, as my opinion has been fully stated. However, it seems you want to clarify some of the seemingly mixed-up information I wrote.

• I created my first Project Euler account around 2005. I lost it along with my laptop during a trip abroad. If I remember correctly, Project Euler had a private messaging feature back then, because I received a message from someone I knew in real life.

• I created the second account after that and decided to write all the solutions in C#. I lost this account on July 7, 2010, after submitting the solution for problem 299 (I remember this clearly because it was a major event in my life).

• My current account, ttminh, was created in 2019 and is shared with my eldest son.
