You say totient, I say tomato...

Post by JohnMorris »

FA (in my mind) Q: prompted by problem Problem 248 (View Problem), what is the correct way to pronounce "totient"? I've only ever read it, never hear it said.

Is it "totty-ent" or "toe-she-ent"?

Or possibly even "tomato"? :)

I pronounce it "fie" or, if I'm in verbose mode, "Oiler fie".
But if I had to read it aloud, my guess would be toe-shent (almost, more of a shwa before the n than an e).
Supported by http://everything2.com/title/totient: "Euler's totient function (pronounced to rhyme with 'quotient') is a unary function on positive integers."
